I fell in love with this cute cotton print! At first, I figured it would become a shirt but making my Shark dress swayed my opinion so another shirt dress it is!
The fabric is the Dear Stella “On the Farm: Sheep Herder”. It’s a cotton that feels more like a quilting weight rather than a lighter apparel weight, but it’s soft and drapes well. This pattern is simple enough to allow the use of quilting cotton, so this fabric is perfect!
The pattern is a basic bodice with at 3/4″ circle skirt. There’s about 2″ of ease overall, so it’s fitted but not super tight. I’ve made it 3 times now and they’re my favorite all-season dresses!
This version features a pintucked collar. Check out last week’s post for an in-depth look on how I added the tucks. I really love this detail. It’s subtle and neat, but still add great texture to the design.
Otherwise, this dress features a button placket, invisible side zipper, and pockets. I use a 9″ zipper, which ends just above the side seam pocket. After making a couple dresses like this, I really prefer a side zipper. I don’t notice it as much as a back zipper, which can get uncomfortable at times.
The seams of the bodice are finished with a French seam, while the skirt seams are bias bound. I zig-zag stitched the zipper side to reduce bulk.
Like all my buttoned clothes, I used grey Mother of Pearl buttons for the front. The placket is functional and necessary with the side zipper. I also added belt loops, although I haven’t used them much.
I’m very fond of this pattern, but I think I will change the waist darts to bust darts. My bust darts fit better in general, while the waist darts sometimes have a little extra at the tip…like a nip. Eep!
I’ve worn this dress alot since making it. It looks nice with a cropped sweater or jacket, too!
