Have you ever wanted to wander deep into the forest, only to rest on a mossy log? Forest fashion may be for you!
Forest fashion is a way of dressing that romanticizes being in the woods. Think Snow White meets Little Red Riding Hood, but taken up a notch. It’s a chance to add whimsey and picture yourself in your own fairytale.
It encompasses many of the aesthetic “cores” that are becoming mainstream. Cottagecore, goblincore, ravencore, adventurecore, and dark academia are all under the umbrella of “forest fashion”.
While the aesthetic casts a wide net, there are consistencies to the different looks of forest fashion.
Consider them guidelines, not rules, and use them flexibly. You can craft your own take on forest fashion to suit your life and personality.
Layers are common in forest fashion. Practically speaking, layers are versatile and give you options as you traverse the woods. Skirts upon skirts create a beautiful volume and swish to an outfit, also adding a pop of color when the underskirt is visible. Sweaters, vests, and jackets are perfect outer layers – keeping you cool in the dark shade of the forest.
Comfort is another crucial part of forest fashion – you’re going on a forest adventure after all. Knee-length skirts are perfect forest fashion because they’re comfortable and give you the freedom to crouch down to admire some moss without worrying about your bum showing. Wearing comfortable, soft layers is another whimsical touch and gives you freedom to explore your environment.
Forest fashion uses natural textiles like linen, flannel, and cotton lawn. Shopping second hand or buying sustainable sourced clothing is preferred over fast fashion, given our penchant for loving the Earth.
Colors in forest fashion, like with the textiles, come from nature. Earth tones and neutrals are great bases, while jewel tones can add spice. Think of the flowers and the birds – they’re rich with colors.
You can also mix and match colors and patterns (like plaid and gingham.) Forest fashion is eclectic, giving you the freedom to experiment.
My favorite forest fashion outfits are dresses over jeans, with a vest and a flannel jacket. And big boots for wandering around the brush or splashing in creeks.
