Combining patterns for a long-sleeved knit dress.
It’s been getting colder here and I wanted a cozy long-sleeved dress. I remembered seeing this gorgeous combination of Deer and Doe’s Ondée sweater and Zéphyr dress online some time ago, and decided to try it!
They are a good pair for a few reasons. Both patterns require fabric with about 30% stretch. The sweater is cropped and the sewing line at the hem hits at same place the skirt sits so it was a perfect match. I should note the skirt waist is 3/4″ larger than the bodice waist.
I love the skirt from the Zéphyr, which is a simple circle skirt but the bodice is sleeveless. And the Ondée bodice is also simple, with the full length sleeves I was after!
I didn’t alter the pieces at all. They are both a size 38. I did lengthen the sleeve just a bit for my personal liking.
To make the pieces match, I pinned the bodice to the skirt at the side seams and center points, then stretched the bodice slightly and pinned some more.
There aren’t pockets in this skirt. Yes, it’s a bummer but I must caution you: do not add pockets to this skirt (maaaybe with a sturdy knit). They can destroy the drape and hang open. Trust me, I tried it with another dress I made last year. It was a disaster!
The skirt is a little short for me but I’ll be wearing leggings with it, so no big deal. My fabric wasn’t wide enough to add any length anyway!
This fabric is super cute. I love triangles, if you haven’t noticed, so I scooped this one up right away. I cut the neckband and cuffs on the cross-grain on purpose. And I cut the sleeves upside down by accident. Directional prints have that extra layer of danger.
I’m really happy with this dress! The long sleeves are so nice now that it’s cold. I really want to make another one. I would narrow the skirt by 3/4″ though, so it matches the bodice perfectly.
I wear this with tall boots and a long coat, so my legs aren’t really getting too exposed to the cold. It’s a really fun dress for Fall and Winter!
