Fig+Needle Crestwood Skirt

I finally got to test a sewing pattern!

It’s the Crestwood skirt from Fig+Needle. It’s a cute, casual skirt with deep front pockets and an invisible zipper in the back. There are 2 variations, on with a notch at the center front waistband, and one with scalloped edges.

I made the version with a notch at the center front of the waistband. It’s a classic vintage feature which I’ve always admired, but would I actually like it? The suspense is killing me!

The fabric I used is a supple linen, about medium weight. I had 1 yard left from a previous project and it fit this pattern perfectly!

Adjustments

I chose my size based off the finished measurements, because the skirt has very little ease in the waistband. After making several high-waist skirts, I know I don’t like mine too tight.

My actual waist measurement fell between sizes 4 and 6. The finished waist measurement for size 6 is the same as my actual waist measurement, so I chose that. It was a good choice, because I can still move and sit!

While installing the zipper, I used a smaller seam allowance, which give me about 1/4″ extra room. I could use another 1/2″-3/4″ more ease in the hips, however.

This skirt fits at the natural waist without a belt, so it has to have a very fit. I definitely recommend making a muslin first.

Review

This review is based on the “beta” version I tested in August. It’s possible changes to the pattern or instructions have been made.

Overall, F+N’s drafting seems good to me – all the pieces matched and were the proper shape; the waistband is curved and it hugs my waist perfectly. And the finished size was true to the stated measurements.

The pattern pieces are easy to interpret, with the CB and CF marked on the appropriate pieces. That’s a very nice touch, because it saved me from double-checking that myself.

Their instruction drawings are clear and they offer tips to make your project go smoothly, too. I found the instructions easy to follow.

This is a cute skirt, though I could use a little more breathing room in my hips and bum. There’s a bit of rumpling on my rump!

Upon reflection, I would fully interface the entire waistband, especially for the notched version.

They recommend hand stitching the waistband and hem facings – a detail I really respect. It gives the skirt a beautiful finish from the outside.

Overall, I enjoyed sewing this pattern! I paired it with a Deer and Doe Plantain shirt in the photos.
