This week has been…interesting, a mix of relaxing and anxiety. My husband and I had planned a vacation for this week, which turned into a stay-cation in the wake of the outbreak. So I’ve been focusing on my sewing projects, gardening, and recharging for the future. We planted seeds, made a compost bin, and have cooked way more than we normally would have. I started two embroidery projects and began playing Animal Crossing. It’s made me feel reconnected with myself, more hopeful too. As I prepare to go back to work and into the world tomorrow, I hope to keep this little spirit of hope alive.
The first thing I worked on was my Captain’s Cardigan pattern in a bright blue wispy linen. The other two I have made were in flannel and I was really excited to try the pattern in a lighter fabric.
I switched up sleeve cuff from pleats to gathers, and finished it with a folded cuff. I like the different look; it seemed appropriate for this fabric. The sleeve is wide enough that I can roll the sleeves up – a must in my book!
The collar and neckline are finished with a facing. In my last two versions, I would hand-stitch the inner edge to the bodice to finish it. This time, I finished the facing by machine to test the method I envisioned. I think it turned out well, but my personal preference remains hand-stitching it in place. The result is more mystifying.
I didn’t interface the collar and cuffs to maintain a soft, crumbled linen look. It’s already wrinkled into a shape it likes and I love it.
This jacket feels perfect for spring and summer. I can’t wait to pair it with dresses and skirts, although it works great with jeans. The color is a great addition to my wardrobe, too!
I hope everyone stays safe, and home if possible!
