11-7-21 Weekly Rally

Making mirrored Patch Pockets

The reversible dress progresses! Now that I’ve finished the panels, it’s time to make the pockets. Since the dress is reversible, the pockets must be exactly aligned with each other. Otherwise, you would see a mysterious box of stitching on the reverse side.

I cut just two pockets – one for each side. I trimmed them so they were exactly the same size, making sure they stayed the exact same size as I did the top hem and folded the ends in.

I determined the pocket placement and pinned a pocket to one side. Then I flipped the dress over (it was not assembled yet) and aligned the second pocket with the first. I did this mostly by feel, flipping the dress over occasionally to double check. It look a couple of tries, but once they were set, I moved all the pins to one side and sewed the pockets down.

Captain's Cardigan & Seren Dress Patterns

The Captain’s Cardigan pattern is complete! It is finally ready to head out for professional grading. The muslin turned out great and was perfect on my fit model, so I am very excited.

The Seren dress (which I am using for the reversible dress) is not far behind. I have the muslin sewn, with only the neck and armhole facing left to test.

Once the patterns are graded, I’ll be able to sew them for others much more quickly and affordably. They’ll also be available as home sewing patterns. I’m working on the instructional drawings for the sewing pattern versions and have a photographer scheduled to take pics soon!

On a Personal Note

Naan the cat evaluates fabric

At the tender age of 3 months, Naan has officially started as an apprentice in my studio. She’s fascinated with tissue patterns and fabrics.

Too fascinated, actually, and I have to distract her from destroying my patterns and knocking my pattern weights around. Thank goodness for cat toys!

Final Thought

This is the front corner of the Captain’s Cardigan – where the facing meets the hem.  This technique is impossible to google so I just had to figure it out!

It so neat, tidy, and compact. The raw edge of the hem is encased in the facing – no more messy folded corner. I wrote the steps as I experimented with the first side, then I followed those instructions to finish the second side.

Swoon worthy! I can’t wait to apply this to my future jackets.
