10/17/21 Weekly Rally

October Dress

20211004_154722496925198055513450

I finished my witchy October dress, complete with moon phase buttons! They’re pretty subtle and perfect for a partial placket, as there are only six. When I make full button-down shirt, I usually need 10-12 buttons.

These buttons are made by Arrow Mountain. I found mine at Firecracker Fabrics.

A full post on this dress is coming this Wednesday. I’ll go into the pattern alterations, construction, and partial plackets!

Pinking Pockets

Pinking shears are a wonderful addition to your sewing kit.

I pink the edges of woven fabrics before washing them and the edges of pockets. Pinking cuts little triangles along the raw edge, preventing them from fraying.

Note that it’s not a full-proof fray solution – the edges will still get messy and could start to fray. If I’m really concerned about a pocket edge, I’ll pink it and zig-zag stitch it as well.

On a Personal Note

We are in full cozy season mode. The cats are being cuddly with the crisp, cool nights. They love to sit on my chaos quilt, which I’ve been using alot.

While in-between longer projects, I’ve been making coasters and napkins with fabric scraps. It’s a nice way to use them up and it keeps me from buying paper towels. I love being able to use sewing to help reduce our household waste. Although, most of my napkins are different, random sizes. I really want to make some coordinated napkins – all the same size – for when we have company.

Final Thought

Here’s a close-up of the moon buttons. I started with the new moon at the top, changing into the full moon at the bottom.

Thanks for stopping by for my weekly rally! What projects are you working on? Let me know in the comments!

May your shears always be sharp and your bobbins full!

  1. The buttons are perfection!

That’s also an awesome use of fabric scraps, so far I’ve been throwing all of mine in a bag for some future scrap project, I think making stuff to replace household products is a great idea 🙂

    1. Thank you!! It’s one of my favorite side perks of sewing- replacing consumables with fabric! Although, I also have some bags full of tiny scraps that need to go into a pillow some day. Are you planning to try the famous pouf? I keep meaning to myself!
